Faith Formation with a New Generation

Picture
Faith Formation with a New Generation is written as a proposal for the future of faith formation with children and adolescents. It is a proposal to transform the way to envision and design faith formation. It reflects a more holistic and comprehensive approach to faith formation grounded in the best understanding of the key factors that contribute to growth in faith and discipleship in the first two decades of life and build a solid foundation for a lifelong faith. You will find  something old in this book—the centrality of an intergenerational faith community and the family; and you will find  something new—twenty-first century approaches and methods for engaging a new generation of young people (Gen Z) and their parents.
  • Chapter one presents the essential features of a twenty-first century approach to faith formation with children, adolescents, and their parents.
  • Chapter two explores how the intergenerational faith community provides rich resources for faith formation and guides you in identifying how to provide intergenerational faith forming experiences for children and adolescents.
  • Chapter three explores the central role of families in faith community and guides you in utilizing five core strategies for family faith forming experiences for children and adolescents.
  • Chapter four explores how Generation Z is learning in new ways and guides you in reimagining and redesigning age-group faith formation with children and adolescents.
  • Chapter five integrates the key concepts and practices so you can design a faith formation plan for children and adolescents (and their families!) that integrates intergenerational, family, and age group faith formation.

Reimagining Faith Formation is a proposal for what twenty-first century faith formation can look like. Chapter One explores four big adaptive challenges facing churches and faith formation to identify the need for a new faith forming ecosystem and new models of faith formation. Chapter Two presents a reimagined faith formation ecosystem for the twenty-first century: intergenerational faith formation in the congregation, age-group and generational faith formation in a variety of physical places and online spaces, family faith formation at home, missional faith formation to the spiritual but not religious and the unaffiliated, and online and digital faith formation. Chapter Three presents a reimagined model of faith formation as a network of relationships, content, experiences, and resources—in physical places and online spaces that is lifelong and life-wide—everywhere, anytime learning within a network of mentors, teachers, family, and peers. Chapter Four presents a reimagined understanding of faith formation curriculum that is holistic, comprehensive and balanced, systemic, lifelong, contextual, digitally-enabled, connected, and multi-platform. Chapter Five reimagines the role of faith formation leader as curator.

We know that parents and the family are the most powerful influence for virtually every child and youth outcome—personal, academic, social, and spiritual-religious; and that parents are the most important influence on the social and religious lives of children, youth, and emerging adults. Families at the Center of Faith Formation proposes a new comprehensive approach to family faith formation that places families at the center of faith formation and develops the family as a community of faith and school of discipleship while equipping parents (and grandparents) to transmit the Christian faith at home. Families at the Center of Faith Formation includes seven chapters rich in foundational insights and practical application:
  1. Transforming Our Narratives of Families in the 21st Century
  2. Understanding 21st Century Parents and Families
  3. Reimagining Family Faith Formation for the 21st Century
  4. Growing in Faith as a Family
  5. Nurturing the Faith of Young People through the Family
  6. Developing the Family-at-the-Center Approach to Faith Formation: Eight Strategies for Family Faith Formation
  7. Designing Faith Formation with Families at the Center
